Chambers County Deputies Rescue Hostages, Suspect Fatally Shot in High-Speed Pursuit

Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reported today that on April 30, 2024, at around 8:30 a.m., his office received distressing news from both the Rosenberg Police Department and Harris County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch. They relayed that a man had abducted a woman and a small child hostage after leaving a residence in Harris County. Prior to fleeing, the suspect fired his weapon at the residence.

Subsequently, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted the suspect’s vehicle, prompting a high-speed pursuit. In response, the regional Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was activated.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Investigators managed to establish contact with the suspect via phone. The suspect disclosed his intention to travel to his residence off Caroline Ave in Cove, Texas, and provoke law enforcement into a confrontation resulting in his death.

As the suspect proceeded onto Plantation Drive, Chambers County Deputies were compelled to engage. They successfully rescued the hostages, unharmed, and engaged the suspect, ultimately resulting in the suspect being shot. Although deputies provided medical assistance, the suspect succumbed to his injuries.

The Department of Public Safety – Texas Rangers has been notified and will be conducting an investigation into the shooting.

Sheriff Hawthorne extended gratitude to the Mont Belvieu Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Baytown Police Department, and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office for their invaluable assistance. He emphasized the importance of the collaborative effort among all agencies involved in addressing this perilous situation.
