Capital Murder Conviction Brings Closure to Horrific Trinity County Case

A Trinity County jury has found Jacob Patrick Chrones guilty of capital murder in a case that shook the community and left two people dead. Judge Mayes sentenced Chrones to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the September 2022 kidnapping and murder of Karen Waters and the brutal killing of her husband, Clayton Waters.

The verdict follows years of investigation and prosecution tied to one of the most disturbing crimes in the county’s recent history. Law enforcement officials escorted the defendants from court following the conclusion of the case, marking the final chapter of a long and emotionally difficult process for investigators and the victims’ family.

“Our hearts remain with the Waters family and all those who loved them,” Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said. “No sentence can undo their loss, but accountability has been secured.”

Sheriff Wallace praised Trinity County District Attorney Bennie Schiro and his prosecution team for what he described as professionalism, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to justice. He also thanked the jury for carefully weighing disturbing evidence and testimony.

“Their verdict reflects courage, integrity, and respect for the rule of law,” Wallace said.

Chief Deputy Jeremy Carroll served as the lead investigator in the case and received special recognition for his attention to detail and dedication throughout the investigation. Sheriff Wallace also acknowledged Sgt. Alissa Cockrell, Sgt. Harrelson, and numerous assisting agencies, including the Texas Rangers, Sam Houston State University Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Criminal Justice K9 Team, and Texas Game Wardens K9 Team.

Co-conspirator Adeline Aparicio Rodriguez previously pleaded guilty to murder for her role in the crimes. In exchange for her cooperation and testimony, she was sentenced to 40 years in prison and will face deportation upon completion of her sentence.

District Attorney Bennie Schiro issued a statement following the verdict, thanking investigators, jurors, and fellow prosecutors for their work on what he called one of the most thoroughly investigated cases of his career.

“I especially want to thank the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office,” Schiro said. “Their investigation, most especially Sheriff Wallace and Chief Carroll, made the jobs of the jurors and myself much easier.”

Schiro noted that questions regarding why the case resulted in a life sentence rather than the death penalty have been addressed separately.

While nothing can erase the pain caused by the murders, officials say the outcome ensures that those responsible have been held fully accountable and that Chrones will never again pose a threat to the community.

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents and standing with victims and their families in the pursuit of justice.
