Bryan Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Stepmother

Bryan, TX – On November 13, 2025, a Brazos County jury sentenced Brian Jutson Sr., of Hearne, to life in prison after he pled guilty to murder.
On June 20, 2023, College Station Police officers responded to a Renee Lane residence following a 911 call reporting that the caller’s father had killed her stepmother. Officers and EMS found the victim, Sherry Shugart Jutson, deceased in the home. Two juveniles were also present in the residence but had not witnessed the incident.
The reporting party indicated that her father, Brian Jutson Sr., was en route to her residence in Bryan. Officers from the College Station Police Department, Bryan Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety intercepted Jutson and took him into custody without incident.
During an interview with Detectives Lovelace and Mable, Jutson admitted to driving approximately seven hours from West Texas to confront the victim over suspicions of an affair. He confessed to strangling the victim and stabbing her multiple times with scissors. After ensuring she had died, he showered, changed clothes, and left the scene.
The autopsy confirmed the victim had injuries consistent with strangulation and over thirty sharp-force wounds caused by scissors.
On November 11, Jutson pled guilty, and the jury proceeded to the punishment phase. Evidence presented included the brutality of the crime, the victim’s injuries, and obsessive calls and texts from the defendant to the victim in the days before her death. Family members also spoke about the victim’s life and the impact of her loss.
Assistant District Attorneys Kara Comte and Ryan Golden prosecuted the case with assistance from Victim Assistance Coordinator Melissa Carter.
“This case is a tragic reminder of the serious dangers of domestic violence. While nothing can alleviate the loss of Sherry’s life, we hope the jury’s verdict brings some measure of comfort to her family,” said Comte and Golden.
