Brownsville Police Apprehend Serial Burglar: Suspect Charged in Spate of Local Break-ins

The Brownsville Police Department Burglary Unit, in collaboration with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, has successfully apprehended Brandon Alberto Torres (20) in connection with a series of burglaries in the 14th Street/International Blvd area.

The investigation began on July 16, 2023, when Brownsville Police Patrol Officers responded to a burglary of habitation in the 3000 block of E. 23rd Street. The victim reported that an intruder had entered their home and stolen an Xbox and personal documents while their 12-year-old daughter was present. The young girl, initially too frightened to speak up, later provided crucial information about the suspect.

Further incidents occurred, including a burglary on September 19, 2023, in the 2000 block of E. 19th Street, where surveillance footage captured a male suspect brandishing a knife and stealing an AR-15, jewelry, and other property.

On September 20, 2023, the Burglary Unit Investigators identified Torres as the suspect based on their past encounters with him and active felony warrants for burglary. A foot pursuit ensued when they found Torres in the 1200 block of Arthur St. He was captured and taken into custody.

During questioning, Torres confessed to several burglaries but denied involvement in the aggravated robbery on E. 23rd St. Initially charged with Evading Arrest on Foot (Class A Misdemeanor) and five counts of Burglary of Habitation (2nd Degree Felony), Torres was later positively identified as the perpetrator of the E. 23rd St. incident. Subsequently, he faced additional charges, including Aggravated Robbery (1st Degree Felony) and Burglary of Habitation With Intent to Commit Other Felony (1st Degree Felony).

Torres was arraigned on September 21, 2023, and received a total bond of $753,500 for all charges.
