Abilene Man Charged with Murder After Woman Found Fatally Shot in Apartment

An Abilene man has been arrested and charged with First Degree Felony Murder after a woman was found fatally shot inside an apartment on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Just before 11 p.m., police responded to a call at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Ivanhoe in South Abilene, reporting an injured subject and a shooting. Upon arrival, officers secured the scene and discovered 24-year-old Aleisha Cabrera inside the apartment, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Steven Peña, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Taylor County Jail. The couple’s young daughter was in the home at the time of the incident and has since been placed with Child Protective Services.

Next of kin notification has been made for the victim. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
