Liberty County Jail Riot Contained; Inmates to Face Charges

A riot involving 44 inmates at the Liberty County Jail was brought under control on Thursday, February 27th, after a standoff with law enforcement.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when inmates in two dorm units barricaded doors and broke windows during a routine contraband shakedown. Jail staff evacuated to a secure hallway while awaiting backup.
Law enforcement quickly regained control of the first dorm unit. The second dorm required the use of chemical agents before deputies could enter and subdue the inmates.
No law enforcement personnel were injured. One inmate, a primary instigator, sustained injuries and is receiving medical evaluation.
Sheriff Bobby Rader is working on relocating inmates to facilitate repairs.
Lt. John Bennett stated that disruptions will not be tolerated and that those responsible will face charges.
Sheriff Rader expressed gratitude to the Liberty Fire Department, Liberty PD, Dayton PD, Texas Rangers, DPS, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Huffman ISD Police, local constables, and the District Attorney’s Office for their assistance.
The investigation is ongoing, and charges are expected for multiple inmates. An update with specific charges will be provided upon completion of the investigation.
