Man Sentenced to 25 Years for 2008 Murder in Deer Park After Long Legal Battle

A man who has been free on bond for nine years following the overturning of his initial conviction for a 2008 murder in Deer Park was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced the sentencing of Cameron Michael Moon, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime.
“Lawyers face deadlines every day,” Ogg said. “Appellate courts should have them as well for criminal cases, and this case shows exactly why. No family should have to wait 16 years for justice.”
Moon fatally shot Christopher Seabreak, another teen from Deer Park, on July 18, 2008. He was arrested and later certified to stand trial as an adult. In 2010, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. However, his conviction was overturned after his attorneys successfully argued that the certification process was not thorough enough.
Following the overturning of his conviction, Moon was certified again to stand trial as an adult in 2015. He was released on bail later that year after serving about seven years in custody. Despite being out on bond, Moon was arrested for driving while intoxicated, which was presented as evidence during his recent trial.
A jury was selected on June 28, 2023, and Moon was convicted a week later. During the sentencing phase on Wednesday, jurors handed down the 25-year sentence. He must serve at least half of this sentence before being eligible for parole.
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Caird, who is the division chief over the Appellate Division of the DA’s Office, prosecuted the case with ADA Sarah Seeley, who is the division chief over the Homicide Division.
Caird stated, “There was a whole team of people who worked on this case, and we are all grateful that we were able to bring Christopher Seabreak’s family a resolution and justice after all these years. We hope this will be the end of their legal saga.”
