Houston Man Sentenced to 35 Years for 2022 Fatal Shooting
Angelo Britton, a Houston man, was sentenced to 35 years in prison this week for fatally shooting his friend, Edward Gray, in 2022, announced Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.
The incident occurred on May 12, 2022, when Britton shot Gray, a 43-year-old father, once through the heart while they were inspecting a mechanical issue with Britton’s silver sedan under an overpass at Beltway 8 and Interstate 10 East around 11 p.m.
Following the shooting, Britton fled the scene, leaving Gray dead on the street. However, witnesses who heard the gunshot and drivers passing by who saw Gray’s body alerted the authorities, leading to a swift response from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance footage from a neighboring home captured the car stopping at the underpass, and further investigation revealed Gray’s presence in Britton’s vehicle earlier in the day, confirmed by surveillance footage from a convenience store.
Britton, who was on deferred adjudication probation for aggravated assault at the time of the murder, was subsequently charged with murder and arrested.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, including tracking data from Britton’s cellphone, linking him to the crime scene. Although the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, Britton was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison by a Harris County jury after an eight-day trial.
Assistant District Attorneys Jay Gordon and Charles Hagerman, who prosecuted the case, emphasized the impact of Gray’s death on his family, particularly his teenage son, who now faces life’s milestones without his father.
Britton must serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for parole. The prosecutors commended the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for their prompt response and thorough investigation, which contributed to Britton’s conviction.
