Driver Detained After Hit-and-Run Leaves 10-Year-Old Boy Dead in Midland
Midland Police Department detained a driver after a hit-and-run incident on Thursday, February 8, 2024. At around 4:35 pm, officers responded to a report of a juvenile being struck by a black truck in the 1900 block of South Lamesa Road. The juvenile, who was in critical condition, was airlifted to Lubbock for medical treatment.
The driver, identified as 50-year-old Rogelio Ortiz, was located and detained by officers at the scene. The incident occurred as the juvenile was crossing the road after leaving school.
Tragically, the juvenile, a 10-year-old boy, succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning, February 9, 2024. Consequently, the Midland Police Department announced that Ortiz would face a new charge of hit-and-run, accident causing death.
The investigation is ongoing.
