Austin Murder Suspect Arrested Months After Deadly Shooting at Down South Cajjun Eats

AUSTIN, Texas – A 32-year-old Austin man wanted on a murder charge stemming from a May shooting outside a restaurant has been captured by a U.S. Marshals-led fugitive task force.

Kovantae Markail Williams was arrested Monday evening at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Howard Lane. He was wanted in connection with a May 6 shooting at Down South Cajjun Eats, located at 15424 F.M. 1825 Road.

According to an Austin Police Department affidavit cited by the U.S. Marshals Service, Austin 911 received multiple calls reporting a shooting at the restaurant and that CPR was being performed.

Responding officers found several people suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigators documented three shootings that occurred within about a minute, beginning around 1:29 a.m. and ending at 1:30 a.m. in the restaurant’s front parking lot.

Austin Police investigated the shootings and obtained a warrant Sept. 3 charging Williams with murder.

Police then requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals-led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Investigators located Williams at the Howard Lane apartment complex and arrested him without incident.

Authorities also arrested Deandre Markeith Stiles, 29, during the operation. Stiles was wanted by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant for possession of a firearm by a felon. Authorities did not indicate that Stiles was a suspect in the May shooting.

The Austin Police Department’s Air Support Unit assisted with the arrests.

Williams and Stiles were booked into the Travis County Jail pending further court proceedings.
