Human Remains Believed to Be Missing New Caney Woman Recovered Near Her Home
NEW CANEY, Texas. Human remains believed to be those of a New Caney woman who disappeared nearly three weeks ago have been recovered in a wooded area near her home, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the remains are believed to be those of Maria Ortiz, who was reported missing by her family on July 20, 2026, after she left her residence in the Oak Knoll area of New Caney on foot.
Family members told investigators Ortiz suffered from memory and confusion issues.
Remains Found Near Last Known Location
The remains were discovered Sunday in a wooded area near Ortiz’s residence, where she was last seen.
While officials are awaiting definitive identification through dental records later this week, investigators said preliminary findings are consistent with the remains being those of Ortiz.
At this time, investigators do not suspect foul play.
The cause and manner of death remain under investigation, but preliminary information indicates Ortiz may have died of natural causes in the wooded area.
Weeks-Long Search Involved Multiple Agencies
Since Ortiz’s disappearance, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive search, pursuing numerous investigative leads and coordinating search efforts with multiple organizations.
Assisting agencies included:

- Montgomery County Search and Rescue
- Texas EquuSearch
- The Call Service
Investigators were also assisted by Ortiz’s family, friends, volunteers, and members of the community.
Following the discovery, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Persons Crimes Detectives, Major Crimes Detectives, and Crime Scene Investigators responded to process the scene and continue the investigation.
The sheriff’s office extended its condolences to Ortiz’s family and thanked the many agencies, volunteers, members of the public, and media outlets that assisted in the search efforts.
Officials said they hope the recovery of Ortiz brings her loved ones some measure of peace despite the tragic outcome.
