Houston Police Investigating Death of 81-Year-Old Woman Found After House Fire

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston police are awaiting autopsy results following the death of an 81-year-old woman whose body was discovered inside a burning home in northeast Houston early Monday morning.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers and firefighters responded to a house fire in the 6700 block of Weaver Road in the Trinity/Houston Gardens area at approximately 2:50 a.m. on July 20.

The Houston Fire Department extinguished the blaze and found the woman’s body inside a bedroom of the residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was identified by Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences as 81-year-old Maria Felix-Martinez.

Investigators determined the home did not have electricity or running water. Police said the woman had been using candles to provide light inside the residence.

According to the preliminary investigation, detectives found no signs of foul play or trauma. Officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the woman’s cause of death.

The Houston Fire Department’s Arson Division is investigating what caused the fire.
