One Dead, Multiple Injured After Multi-Alarm Apartment Fire in Spring, Texas

SPRING, Texas. One person was killed, six others were hospitalized and approximately 25 residents were displaced after a multi-alarm apartment fire early Monday morning at the Cypresswood Apartments in Spring.

According to the Klein Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 1:39 a.m. on July 20 to the Cypresswood Apartments near the intersection of Cypresswood Drive and Kuykendahl Road.

First-arriving crews encountered heavy fire extending through the roof of the apartment building, along with a partial structural collapse.

Before firefighters arrived, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who were in the area on an unrelated call, spotted smoke coming from the complex. Deputies, along with neighbors, began knocking on apartment doors and evacuating residents before fire crews reached the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Klein Fire Department Engine 37 and Ponderosa Fire Department Engine 62 performed a window rescue to remove a trapped resident from the burning building. Crews immediately began CPR on the victim.

A total of 13 civilians were affected by the fire.

Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare transported six people to local hospitals. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, one victim died from injuries sustained in the fire.

Seven additional residents were evaluated and treated at the scene. Fire officials said all occupants of the building have been accounted for.

Five firefighters were also treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, dehydration and smoke inhalation. All are expected to recover.

The fire destroyed an eight-unit apartment building and displaced approximately 25 residents.

Firefighters from the Spring Fire Department, Ponderosa Fire Department, Harris County ESD 17 Little York Fire Department and Northwest Volunteer Fire Department assisted Klein Fire Department during the response.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished those injured a full recovery, while thanking firefighters, EMS personnel, deputies and other first responders for their efforts during the emergency.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area while investigators continue their work.
