18-Year-Old Killed, Second Victim Wounded in North Houston Shooting; Suspect Arrested

HOUSTON, Texas – An 18-year-old man was killed and another person was wounded in a shooting Sunday morning at a business in North Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the 14900 block of the North Freeway near Airtex after receiving reports of a shooting.

When deputies arrived, they found two gunshot victims.

One victim, identified as 18-year-old Jonathan Mata, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second victim, a 20-year-old, was also taken to a hospital and was reported to be in fair condition.

According to investigators, the suspected shooter fled the scene in a vehicle.

With assistance from a witness and the Houston Police Department, authorities located the vehicle and its driver a short time later.

The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Juan Lopez.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives conducted the follow-up investigation and charged Lopez with murder in connection with the fatal shooting.

Lopez was booked into the Harris County Jail.

The investigation remains ongoing.
