Lubbock Police Arrest 18-Year-Old in Fatal Weekend Shooting

LUBBOCK, Texas — An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a weekend shooting that claimed the life of a 27-year-old man.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:36 a.m. on July 5 to the 700 block of North Ithaca Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired.

When officers arrived, they found 27-year-old Joe Ybarra Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Ybarra was transported by ambulance to University Medical Center, where he later died. The investigation was then turned over to the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit.

During the investigation, detectives identified 18-year-old Keymarion Burton as the suspect and obtained a warrant charging him with murder.

Burton was arrested without incident at approximately 9:57 a.m. on July 8 at a business in the 7700 block of 66th Street by investigators with the Texas Anti-Gang Center–Lubbock.

He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center, where he remains in custody on a $250,000 bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
