Driver Killed After Pickup Crashes Into Disabled Tractor-Trailer in North Freeway HOV Lane

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A driver was killed early Tuesday morning after his pickup truck crashed into the rear of a disabled tractor-trailer on the North Freeway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 4:59 a.m. on June 23 in the 19000 block of the North Freeway.
Investigators said Rubi Hernandez was operating a black 2017 Freightliner tractor towing a 2016 Great Dane trailer while traveling northbound when the vehicle experienced mechanical problems involving its air brake system.
The Freightliner became disabled in the northbound High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane. Authorities said the truck’s emergency flashers were activated and two warning triangles had been placed behind the disabled vehicle as required.
According to investigators, Hector Bazan was driving a gray 2024 Ford Ranger northbound in the HOV lane when he approached the disabled tractor-trailer.
Preliminary findings indicate Bazan failed to control his speed and struck the rear of the Great Dane trailer.
Bazan suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said he showed no signs of life when emergency responders arrived.
Investigators reported that Hernandez remained at the scene, cooperated fully with the investigation, and showed no signs of intoxication.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
No additional information has been released.
