Gunman Opens Fire on Deputies Before Barricading Himself With Children in Aldine Home

ALDINE, Texas – A man accused of opening fire on Harris County deputies during an attempted burglary investigation was taken into custody after a foot pursuit and standoff inside a trailer home, authorities said.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an emergency call in the 14900 block of Sellers Road after the owner of a barbershop reported an attempted burglary. Security cameras had captured a suspect inside the business.
Deputies surrounded the building upon arrival and encountered the suspect attempting to exit through the rear door. Authorities said the suspect opened fire at deputies, prompting an exchange of gunfire as three deputies returned fire while defending themselves.
The suspect fled on foot and forced entry into a nearby trailer home. Deputies surrounded the residence and issued commands for occupants to exit. Several adults left the home, but three children remained inside with the suspect, creating what officials described as a dangerous situation.
Deputies acted quickly and entered the residence to secure the occupants and located the suspect inside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials said he is expected to recover.
The suspect was identified as Ivan E. Torres, 34. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and burglary of a building and was booked into the Harris County Jail.
No deputies were injured during the incident. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez commended the responding deputies, including District 2 and K9 units, for their actions.
In accordance with department policy, the three deputies who discharged their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Authorities said two of the deputies are 32 years old and one is 23, with service lengths ranging from a trainee status to 10 years with the sheriff’s office.
