Houston Police Releases Body Camera Video in Fifth Ward Officer-Involved Shooting

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Police Department has released body worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that occurred January 11, 2026, in the 4800 block of Wayne Street in the city’s Fifth Ward area.

According to HPD, officers responded that Sunday afternoon to a report of a suspicious person armed with a weapon who was allegedly attempting to force entry into a residence.

When officers arrived, they encountered 29-year-old Larry Menifee Jr. near a blue shipping container. Police said Menifee was armed with a firearm and was behaving erratically. Officers gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon, but he refused.

During the confrontation, Menifee placed the gun to his own head. At some point in the encounter, HPD Officer I. Lagunas discharged his duty weapon.

Menifee was pronounced deceased at the scene by Houston Fire Department personnel.

HPD stated that autopsy results are still pending. At this time, investigators say it remains unclear whether Menifee was struck by the officer’s gunfire, a self-inflicted gunshot wound, or both.

The incident remains under investigation.
