Stafford Man Kills One, Fires at Officers Before Barricading Himself in Home

On September 3, 2025, at approximately 9:55 p.m., a man walked into the Stafford Police Department reporting that his son, Adrian Mercado, 35, had killed someone at his residence in the 13000 block of Lawrence Lane and was armed and dangerous.
Responding officers arrived and discovered a deceased male, Thomas Goodson, 32, in the backyard of the residence. Mercado was initially believed to have fled the scene.
The Missouri City Police Department’s K-9 Unit was called in to assist with the search. During the operation, Mercado opened fire on officers, striking one in the abdomen. The bullet was deflected by the officer’s police radio, preventing serious injury.
For nearly 90 minutes, Mercado intermittently fired shots at officers from inside the residence while barricaded. A perimeter was established, and the East Fort Bend County Regional SWAT Team—with members from Stafford, Missouri City, and Sugar Land—was deployed to assist.
A Stafford officer discharged one round at the suspect, though it is not confirmed whether Mercado was hit. Preliminary findings indicate the suspect’s injuries were self-inflicted, but the case remains under investigation.
“Last night’s events emphasize the dangers law enforcement officers face when responding to violent situations,” said Lt. Luciano Lopez of the Stafford Police Department. “We are grateful that no officers were seriously injured, and our thoughts remain with the victim’s family during this tragic time. We appreciate the assistance of our local law enforcement partners and the community’s patience as this investigation continues.”
The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.
