Knife-Wielding Suspect Fatally Shot by Brazoria County Deputies After Chase

A suspect with active assault warrants was fatally shot by Brazoria County deputies early Thursday morning, June 19, following a high-speed pursuit and a confrontation in a wooded area. The incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers and the Sheriff’s Office internal affairs.

Deputies initially responded to a call from a woman concerned for her safety, believing the suspect might be headed to her residence. Although the suspect was not found at the home, deputies located a vehicle matching his description committing a traffic violation. When deputies attempted a traffic stop after the vehicle turned into the victim’s neighborhood, the suspect fled, initiating a pursuit.

During the chase, the suspect reportedly drove at high speeds and even against traffic on a highway before crashing into a ditch. He then fled on foot into a densely wooded area.

Deputies established a perimeter and called in additional resources, including K9 units and drones, to contain and apprehend the suspect. As deputies attempted to take him into custody, the suspect reportedly presented a knife, leading at least two deputies to discharge their weapons.

The suspect was moved to a safe area for emergency medical care and was transported via Life Flight to a Houston-area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No deputies reported major injuries.

In accordance with standard policy, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave. Any shooting involving a Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office deputy is subject to both internal investigation and an external investigation by the Texas Rangers, who are on scene.

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office stated that the safety of its citizens remains its top priority.
