Wharton Mother Arrested for Capital Murder in Death of 2-Year-Old Daughter
Jasmine Latson

A 21-year-old woman from Wharton has been arrested and charged with Capital Murder in connection to the death of her young daughter.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, Jasmine Latson surrendered to authorities after she and her attorney, Kenneth Allen, were notified that a warrant had been issued for her arrest. The charge stems from the April 2025 death of Latson’s two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Zayla Laitkep.

The arrest follows an extensive investigation led by the Wharton Police Department with assistance from the Texas Rangers. Latson was taken into custody without incident.

The case remains under active investigation.
