Two Suspects Charged After Shooting at Houston Officers in Apartment Standoff

Two armed suspects have been charged in a shooting incident involving Houston police officers at an apartment complex located at 8360 Park Place Boulevard around 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 1.

Alexis Otoniel Martinez, 17, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 482nd State District Court. He remains hospitalized, and a booking photo is not yet available. A juvenile female suspect has also been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and has been referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities. Her identity has not been released due to her age.

Houston Police Department Senior Officers R. Benavides and F. Jaimes, who discharged their weapons during the incident, were not injured. Officer Benavides has served since September 1994, while Officer Jaimes has been with HPD since January 2013. Both are assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division.

According to HPD Special Investigations Unit detectives, officers were dispatched to the complex following reports of suspicious individuals with a weapon. The property manager informed officers that two individuals had entered a vacant apartment. When officers arrived, one suspect pointed a weapon at them. Officers retreated and issued verbal commands for the suspects to surrender, but they refused and opened fire. Officers returned fire, striking Martinez.

Martinez was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center, while the juvenile female suspect was also taken for treatment of minor injuries.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted, and charges were filed against both suspects. As per standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the case is under investigation by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
