Two Sacramento Men Charged in 2023 Montgomery County Murder

Montgomery County, Texas – Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Gang Investigations Unit have arrested and charged two men from California in connection with the November 1, 2023, murder of Vyshawn Johnson in Porter, Texas.

After an extensive, multi-agency investigation, authorities identified 31-year-old Nishad Scruggs and 28-year-old Trevon Oates, both of Sacramento, as suspects in the case.

Scruggs was arrested in Sacramento on June 25, 2025, with the help of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. He has since been extradited to Texas, where he remains in custody at the Montgomery County Jail.

On October 7, 2025, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office presented the case to a Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against Oates for his role in the murder. Oates is currently jailed in Sacramento on an unrelated murder charge and will be extradited to Texas once that case concludes.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for their collaboration and support throughout the investigation.
