Two Charged in Officer-Involved Shooting After Burglary at Harris County Deputy’s Home

Detectives with Constable Mark Herman’s Office Criminal Investigations Division-Special Victims Unit have arrested two suspects in connection with a July 17, 2024, officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 8100 block of Windy Acres.
According to investigators, an off-duty Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Deputy, dressed in full uniform, was leaving his residence for work when he encountered two males actively burglarizing his home. The deputy attempted to detain the suspects, who fled on foot. During the pursuit, both suspects reportedly fired handguns at the deputy.
Following an extensive investigation, detectives identified the suspects as 19-year-old Cristian Barrera and 22-year-old Leo Lopez.
On June 2, 2025, Barrera was arrested by investigators from Constable Mark Herman’s Office with assistance from Precinct 5 deputies. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant. His bond was set at $75,000 by the 178th District Court.
Leo Lopez, who was already in custody at the Harris County Jail on unrelated charges, was also charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant. His bond was set at $100,000 by the 180th District Court.
The investigation was led by the Special Victims Unit of the Constable’s Criminal Investigations Division.
