Travis County Jury Finds Defendant Guilty of Murder After Extensive Trial

On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, a Travis County jury found Juan Carbajal Jaimes, 25, guilty of Murder. Mr. Jaimes’s trial began on Monday, May 20, 2024, with jury selection and testimony starting the next day. The jury deliberated on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, and delivered a guilty verdict. The following day, on Thursday, May 23, 2024, after considering the case, the jury sentenced Mr. Jaimes to ten years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the offense of Murder with a finding of Sudden Passion.

The Austin Police Department had charged Mr. Jaimes with the murder of Alfred Lockett, 48, which occurred on September 12, 2017. Following his indictment on September 19, 2017, Mr. Jaimes fled to Mexico but was later extradited to the United States on January 31, 2023, by deputies with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Assistant District Attorneys Erik Nielsen, Cindy Izquierdo, and Amrit Sharma prosecuted the case against Juan Carbajal Jaimes with the assistance of Investigator Mike Henderson, Victim Counselors Larissa Youngblood, Whitney Klusman, and Raquel Pompey, Paralegal Raquel Sanchez, and Legal Secretaries Chardell Clarke and Rebecca Labeth. Austin Police Department Homicide Detective Daryl Tynes led the investigation into Mr. Jaimes’s case.

Travis County District Attorney José Garza expressed gratitude to the dedicated staff and law enforcement partners involved in the case. “Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff and law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim,” said Garza. “We hope this verdict brings closure and peace to the victim’s family.”
