Travis County Grand Jury Clears Deputy Neil Reilly in Use of Force Case

Travis County District Attorney José Garza has announced that the Travis County Special Grand Jury, concluding its review on Thursday, January 18, 2024, did not return an indictment for Travis County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Neil Reilly #4567. The case in question involved the use of force on September 17, 2022, where Mr. Rito Morales tragically died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

District Attorney Garza stated, “The District Attorney’s office takes the work of presenting all facts and evidence to a grand jury very seriously. In this case, an independent group of members of the Travis County community heard the evidence and law and decided that Travis County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Reilly’s conduct was not unlawful.”

Since January 1, 2021, a total of 98 cases against law enforcement officers have been presented to a grand jury. Including this recent case, 65 times the grand jury has returned a no bill.
