Texas Rangers Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting After Domestic Violence Call in Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Texas Rangers are leading an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning following a reported domestic disturbance in a Brownsville neighborhood.
Brownsville Police were called at approximately 6:36 a.m. to the 5500 block of Rawhide Drive after receiving a report that a subject had been shot during a domestic incident. Investigators said the suspect’s wife and daughter were attempting to leave the residence in a vehicle when the suspect fired shots in their direction.
Responding officers located the suspect standing in the middle of the street. Police said the suspect opened fire on officers during the encounter, prompting an officer to return fire, striking the suspect.
The wife and daughter were not hit by gunfire but were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound that police said is not life-threatening. No officers were injured during the incident.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 41-year-old Gerardo Enrique Garcia. He is facing multiple charges, including seven counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, two counts of aggravated assault family violence, two counts of unlawful restraint, one count of discharging a firearm in a municipality, and one count of criminal mischief. His bond was set at $2,270,000.
The Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation. The case remains active, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
