Texas DPS Cracks Down on Fraudulent Vehicle Inspections in Houston Operation

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has intensified its efforts to curb illegal activity tied to fraudulent vehicle inspections, known as “clean scanning.” In its latest enforcement operation in the Houston area, DPS secured 19 warrants related to clean scanning, resulting in five arrests as of November 7, 2024.

Over recent months, DPS’s Regulatory Services Division (RSD) has conducted multiple operations at inspection stations suspected of fraudulent activity across Texas. Working with DPS’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Texas Highway Patrol (THP), and Houston Police Department (HPD), officials conducted surveillance on targeted locations, leading to numerous arrests.

During the recent Houston operation, five individuals were arrested on organized criminal activity charges related to clean scanning, while warrants were obtained for 14 additional suspects involved in similar offenses.

Since February 13, 2023, DPS has secured or served a total of 88 arrest warrants tied to clean scanning activities statewide.

“Clean scanning is a serious crime,” DPS stated, urging anyone who suspects illegal inspection activities to report it by calling (512) 424-0290.
