Teen Charged with Murder, Aggravated Assault in Fatal Houston Meyerland Area Shooting

Houston police have arrested Zion Armon Mitchell, 18, in connection with a fatal shooting on May 24 at 5410 North Braeswood Boulevard (Meyerland Area) that left one man dead and another wounded. Mitchell is charged with murder in the 482nd State District Court and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 183rd State District Court.

The deceased victim has been identified as Kenneth Leaks, 18.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants J. Nielsen and A. Lopez, and Detectives K. Hale and C. Bowling reported that HPD patrol officers responded to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital after a male, later identified as Leaks, was admitted with a gunshot wound. Officers learned he had been transported to the hospital by private vehicle and that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex at the aforementioned address.

Witnesses told investigators that Leaks was meeting an individual at the complex for a transaction when he was approached by several black males. During the exchange, one suspect retrieved a firearm and shot Leaks at least once. Another male, 17, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the gunfire.

Further investigation identified Mitchell as a suspect. He was arrested on Monday, June 16, by the HPD Southeast Patrol Division’s Crime Suppression Team and subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail.
