Sweetwater Police Officer Faces Charges After Excessive Force Allegations

On March 24, 2024, the Sweetwater Police Department received a complaint accusing a patrol officer of using excessive force during an arrest. The complaint alleged that Corporal Caleb Norman had struck a handcuffed individual in the face. Following the complaint, Cpl. Norman was placed on administrative leave while an internal affairs investigation commenced. The Texas Rangers were also notified to examine any potential criminal aspects of the case.

After conducting its investigation, internal affairs determined that Cpl. Norman had violated department policy. Consequently, on June 12, 2024, he was placed on indefinite suspension and dismissed from his duties with the Sweetwater Police Department.

On June 18, 2024, the Texas Rangers presented their findings to a grand jury in Nolan County, resulting in an indictment. Subsequently, on the morning of June 22, 2024, Cpl. Norman voluntarily surrendered to the Runnels County Jail, facing a charge of Official Oppression.

Further details regarding the internal affairs investigation are withheld pending an appeal process. Questions about the criminal case should be directed to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which now oversees the matter in coordination with the Taylor County District Attorney’s Office.
