SWAT Operation in Lockhart Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting, Investigation Underway

The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 7:34 p.m. in the 900 block of South 1st Street in Lockhart, Texas.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when APD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit responded to a request for mutual aid in Lockhart. During the operation, an officer discharged their firearm, striking one suspect. The suspect was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

The officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave. The investigation includes two parallel inquiries: a criminal investigation led by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Rangers, in coordination with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.

Transparency remains a key focus in this ongoing investigation. However, at the request of the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office, this incident will not be treated as an APD Critical Incident Briefing (CIB), and no materials will be released. The APD SWAT Team’s involvement adhered to standard operating procedures for mutual aid requests.

Further details about the incident are pending as the investigation remains in its early stages.
