Suspect Arrested in Fatal Stabbing on Montrose Boulevard in Houston

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man at 4720 Montrose Boulevard around 3:10 p.m. on August 24. The suspect, James Wilford Brooks, 49, is charged with murder in the 262nd State District Court. A booking photo of Brooks is attached to this news release.
The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Phillip Cason.
According to HPD Homicide Division Detectives H. Martinez and S. Chettry, HPD patrol officers responded to a stabbing call in the parking lot of a business at the above address and found the victim unresponsive near the doorway. He had been stabbed multiple times. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Mr. Cason to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
A witness reported seeing an unknown black male suspect running westbound on Banks Street. Further investigation led to the release of surveillance photos of the person of interest on August 28. The investigation subsequently identified the male as Brooks.
On August 29, Brooks was arrested by Metro Police officers on an unrelated charge. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was notified, and Brooks was charged in connection with this incident.
