Corey Dontaye James

A suspect wanted in connection to a fatal shooting and a wounding on January 23 has been taken into custody. Corey Dontaye James, 20, was charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 338th State District Court.

The shooting occurred at around 1 p.m. on Bailey Street, where 21-year-old Carnell Meeks Jr. was fatally shot during a dispute. A 56-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting and transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Witnesses reported that Meeks and James got into a verbal altercation over a gaming console, which escalated into a physical fight. As others attempted to separate them, James pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking both Meeks and the woman.

Meeks was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and the woman was treated for her injuries.

Following the investigation, James was identified as the shooter. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was notified, and on January 27, James turned himself in to authorities. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail.
