Sugar Land Physician’s License Suspended After Performing Surgery While Intoxicated

SUGAR LAND, TX – The Texas Medical Board has temporarily suspended the Texas medical license of Azul Shiraz Jaffer, M.D., after determining that his continued practice of medicine poses an ongoing threat to public welfare.
According to the Board, a disciplinary panel issued the emergency suspension on December 30, 2025, without prior notice. The action took effect immediately.
The panel found that Dr. Jaffer habitually used drugs or intoxicating liquors to a degree that interfered with his ability to practice medicine safely, prompting the emergency measure to protect patients.
In December, 2025, Dr. Jaffer was indicted by a Fort Bend County Grand Jury, charging him with Performing Surgery While Intoxicated. As a result, Sugar Land Police arrested him.
A temporary suspension hearing with notice will be scheduled as soon as practicable, with at least 10 days’ notice provided to Dr. Jaffer, unless he waives the hearing. Until the Board takes further action, the suspension of his medical license remains in effect.
