Sugar Land Mailman Arrested in Mail Theft Case Involving More Than 50 Victims
Jeland Mouton

Sugar Land, TX — A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier has been arrested in connection with a mail theft investigation involving dozens of victims in Fort Bend County.

The Sugar Land Police Department, working alongside Special Agents from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, arrested Jeland Mouton on March 9 on a charge of Mail Theft, a first-degree felony.

The arrest follows a joint investigation launched after authorities received multiple reports over the past several months involving forged checks.

Investigators identified Mouton, a postal employee, as a suspect and conducted surveillance that ultimately led to the arrest.

When taken into custody, Mouton was found in possession of 226 pieces of mail addressed to more than 50 different individuals. Authorities said 66 of the items contained checks that could potentially have been used for check forgery.

Officials confirmed all of the mail was unopened and has been returned to the U.S. Postal Service to be delivered to the intended recipients.

Police say the case currently involves more than 50 victims and addresses.

Authorities are reminding residents to remain vigilant against check fraud. Officials recommend regularly monitoring bank accounts when writing checks to quickly identify unauthorized activity.

They also suggest using gel pens when writing checks to help prevent the chemical removal of ink, placing checks inside a folded piece of paper within envelopes to reduce visibility, and using secure online or direct bill-pay services when possible.

Anyone with information related to check forgery or mail theft is encouraged to contact Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers and submit a tip.
