‘Slider Crime’ Alert Issued for Greater Harris County Gas Stations

The Texas Gulf Coast Crime Prevention Association is warning residents about a prevalent crime trend in the greater Harris County area known as “sliding.”
“Slider crime” specifically targets individuals at gas stations and involves thieves swiftly and discreetly entering unlocked vehicles to steal valuables or the entire vehicle. These opportunistic thefts often occur while the owner is distracted, either pumping gas or briefly inside the convenience store. The entire act can take mere seconds, leaving victims unaware until after the perpetrator has fled.
To help prevent becoming a victim of slider crime, the Texas Gulf Coast Crime Prevention Association offers the following safety tips:
- Lock Doors and Take Keys: Always lock your vehicle doors, even if you are only stepping away for a moment. Take your keys with you.
- Keep Valuables Hidden: Ensure that purses, wallets, phones, and other valuable items are not left in plain sight. Store them out of view, preferably in the trunk or under a seat.
- Choose Well-Lit Stations: Opt for gas stations that are well-lit, as this can deter potential criminals.
- Be Aware of Surroundings: Pay attention to the people and activity around you while you are pumping gas or at the station.
- Don’t Distract Yourself: Avoid distractions such as lengthy phone calls while pumping gas. Remain vigilant and aware of your vehicle.
The Texas Gulf Coast Crime Prevention Association urges the public to remain vigilant and implement these safety measures to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of slider crime at gas stations in the greater Harris County area.
