A hit-and-run incident on January 2 has claimed the life of Waswa Sula, 38. The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. at 3500 Hillcroft Avenue in Midwest Houston.

Mr. Sula, identified as the victim, was crossing the street at Hillcroft Avenue, not in a crosswalk, when he was struck by a silver Toyota Corolla.

The driver, Gabriel Mejia Cor, 25, fled the scene, but law enforcement located him and his vehicle shortly afterward. Mejia Cor was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 184th State District Court. He was taken into custody and transported to the Harris County Jail.

At the time of the crash, Sula was conscious and breathing when paramedics took him to a hospital. He was released from the hospital on January 7. However, on January 13, Sula was found unresponsive on a sidewalk. He was promptly taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Houston Police Department is actively investigating the incident, and Mejia Cor will face legal proceedings related to the charges against him.
