Nearly 300 Roosters Rescued in Major Cockfighting Bust in Harris County

CROSBY, TX – Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies uncovered an alleged cockfighting operation over the weekend after responding to a call for service at a property in the 4200 block of Danek on Saturday, December 27.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies arriving at the scene discovered a large number of roosters, including numerous birds that were already dead. Detectives were called in to further investigate what authorities described as a suspected animal fighting operation.
Following the investigation, 45-year-old Magdaleno Herrera was charged on Sunday, December 28, with cockfighting related offenses, including space, ownership, training, and equipment. Five additional individuals believed to be spectators were issued citations at the scene. Herrera was booked into the Harris County Jail.
Authorities reported approximately 300 live roosters were rescued during the operation, while about 50 dead roosters were also found on the property.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office credited Harris County Veterinary Public Health and the Houston Humane Society and SPCA for assisting with the rescue and care of the animals. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to gather information related to the case.
