Man on Electric Scooter Killed in Crash Near TSU Campus

HOUSTON, TX — Houston police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a 70-year-old man riding an electric scooter near the Texas Southern University campus late Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. on July 16 at 4558 Ennis Street, near the Columbia Tap Rail-Trail, which intersects with a TSU driveway.

According to HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Ross and Officer R. Bymaster, a red Mazda CX5 was traveling south on the driveway when it entered the intersection. A man on an electric scooter was traveling eastbound on the trail at a high rate of speed and failed to yield at a stop sign. The Mazda struck the scooter in the intersection, ejecting the rider.

The male was transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity is pending notification of next of kin by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The driver of the Mazda remained at the scene, showed no signs of intoxication, and was released after questioning.

The investigation is ongoing.
