Man in Custody After Deadly Shooting, Carjacking on Southwest Freeway in Houston

A 20-year-old male is in custody in Corpus Christi following a fatal shooting and carjacking that occurred around 6:35 p.m. Thursday, May 29, on the 11700 block of the Southwest Freeway (South Interstate Highway 59) service road.

The victim, a 55-year-old male, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with a gunshot wound and later pronounced deceased. His identity is pending notification to next of kin by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to the Houston Police Department Homicide Division, officers responded to reports of a crash involving a gray Dodge Charger and a black Toyota Prius. Witnesses reported that the driver of the Dodge—later identified as the person of interest—briefly spoke with the Prius driver before walking away toward Wilcrest Drive. He was described as a young Hispanic male with a thin build, mullet-style haircut, wearing black pants and a black t-shirt.

Another witness later reported seeing a man matching the same description step into traffic, fire a gunshot, and flee in a red Hyundai Elantra. That vehicle’s driver was shot and later died at the hospital. The shooter then allegedly pointed a gun at the witness and stole his gray Audi SQ5.

Neither the Prius driver nor the Audi owner was injured.

Through investigative efforts, the Audi was traced to Corpus Christi. Local authorities located the vehicle and detained a male nearby who matched the suspect’s description and was armed with a handgun. He remains in custody pending formal charges.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
