Man Dies Following Struggle With Detention Officers at Harris County Jail

HOUSTON, TX – A 32-year-old man died early Tuesday morning, July 9, 2025, after a physical altercation with detention officers during his release process from the Harris County Jail.
Alexis Jovany Cardenas had been in custody since Sunday, July 6, following his arrest by the Houston Police Department on municipal charges. He was released from custody at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday and was being escorted toward the exit when he began physically resisting detention officers.
During the struggle, one officer deployed a Taser, which was not immediately effective. Cardenas briefly forced his way back into the secure area where inmates were processed for release. Multiple detention officers eventually restrained him.
Shortly after officers regained control, they noticed Cardenas was unresponsive. CPR was administered, and jail medical staff responded to the area. Cardenas was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 1:57 a.m.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the incident. An autopsy will be conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. An internal administrative review by the Sheriff’s Office is also underway to determine if policies were followed.
In accordance with Sheriff’s Office policy, video footage of the incident will be released within 45 days.
