Man Charged After Houston Police Officer Fires at Suspect
Christopher Michael Rodriguez, 36, faces multiple charges following an incident on Thursday night at 600 East Tidwell Road. Houston Police Officer J. Eakins discharged his weapon during the encounter, but remained unharmed.
Rodriguez is accused of aggravated assault of a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is currently hospitalized.
The incident unfolded when an HPD patrol officer heard gunshots while on patrol near the area. Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Eakins spotted Rodriguez, armed with a pistol, fleeing in front of a store. Despite verbal commands to drop the weapon, Rodriguez continued to run with the pistol in hand.
Fearing for his safety, Officer Eakins discharged his weapon multiple times, striking Rodriguez. The suspect was then detained and provided medical assistance until further officers arrived.
An initial investigation revealed that the gunfire stemmed from an altercation involving Rodriguez and another individual. Rodriguez admitted to firing his weapon into the air before officers intervened.
Rodriguez’s injuries are reported as non-life-threatening. He is expected to face trial for his involvement in the altercation.
