League City Police Arrest Two in Violent Purse-Snatching Targeting Elderly Couple

LEAGUE CITY, TX — Two Houston residents have been arrested and charged in connection with a violent purse-snatching that left a 70-year-old man injured earlier this month outside an H-E-B in League City.
On September 9, 2025, officers from the League City Police Department’s Business District Unit (BDU) responded to a robbery call in the parking lot of the H-E-B at 2955 S. Gulf Freeway. The victims, a 70-year-old man and his 67-year-old wife, told officers that a female suspect in a gray Honda CR-V grabbed the woman’s purse while a male suspect drove the vehicle away.
During the struggle, the husband was dragged and knocked to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. The couple later discovered several unauthorized charges on their credit cards at locations in Houston.
Investigators identified the suspects as 48-year-old Christie Hughes and 47-year-old John Lemon, Jr., both of Houston, with assistance from the Missouri City Police Department.
On September 19, 2025, League City detectives, along with LCPD’s Special Investigations Unit and the Houston Police Department’s Southwest Crime Suppression Team, carried out coordinated arrests. Hughes was taken into custody during a traffic stop on US 90 in Houston, while Lemon was arrested at a residence in the 12,000 block of Ormandy Street.
Both suspects face charges of:
- Aggravated Robbery (Bond set at $250,000 each)
- Credit/Debit Card Abuse of the Elderly (Bond set at $60,000 each)
The League City Police Department praised the BDU for its persistence and credited the SIU and HPD’s CST with providing critical assistance in the investigation.
