Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency at Harris County Jail

Alexander Winstel, 43, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital at 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2025, after suffering a medical emergency while in custody at the Harris County Jail.
Winstel had a known life-threatening health condition, according to officials. He had been in custody for four days following his arrest by the Houston Police Department on multiple charges, including aggravated assault of a family member, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, theft, and driving while intoxicated.
Winstel’s death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. In accordance with state law, the Houston Police Department is conducting an external investigation. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also conducting a review to determine whether policies and procedures were followed.
An autopsy will be performed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences to determine the official cause of death.
