Houston Police Shoots Armed Robbery Suspect During Foot Pursuit
Houston police are currently investigating the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect by an HPD officer. The incident occurred at 100 Eastwood Street around 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, February 29.
The identity of the suspect remains pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The officer involved, identified as Officer A. Yanez, discharged his duty weapon during the incident but was not injured. Officer Yanez has been with the force since December 1993 and is assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division.
The events leading up to the shooting unfolded as Eastside patrol officers responded to two nearby robberies with similar suspect descriptions. The suspect was reportedly riding an electric scooter. Officer Yanez, while on patrol, located a male matching the suspect’s description and followed him to the aforementioned address. Upon exiting his vehicle, the suspect fled on foot with Officer Yanez in pursuit.
During the chase, the suspect took cover behind a tree and, ignoring verbal commands to stop, produced a pistol and fired shots at Officer Yanez. In response, Officer Yanez returned fire. Despite attempting to flee again, the suspect collapsed a short distance away. Officer Yanez provided medical assistance until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following standard procedure, the case is now under investigation by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
