Houston Police Investigate Police Involved Fatal Shooting

The Houston Police Department is conducting an investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday, September 29, at 6767 Bennington Street in Northeast Houston around 8:50 p.m. The incident involved an armed male suspect who was shot by Officer T. Hitz, a member of the Houston Police Department.

Officer Hitz, who has been serving as an officer since August 2017 and is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, discharged his duty weapon during the incident but was not injured.

The identity of the deceased male suspect is currently pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The incident unfolded when officers from the Northeast Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team were conducting an investigation at the specified address. During the investigation, Officer Hitz encountered the suspect, who was armed with an assault rifle-style weapon. The suspect pointed the weapon at the officer, prompting Officer Hitz to fire in self-defense, striking the suspect at least once.

Following the shooting, officers provided immediate first aid to the suspect until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him deceased.

In connection with the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officers detained seven adult males and one juvenile male at the scene. All individuals were interviewed and subsequently released, with no charges filed against them at this time.

Consistent with standard procedures for officer-involved shootings within the city limits, the case is currently under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
