Houston Man Killed in Wrong-Way Crash Involving Off-Duty Deputy

On Saturday, August 24, 2024, Richard Resendez, a 28-year-old resident of Precinct 6 in Houston, lost his life in a vehicular accident involving a former deputy of the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office. The accident took place near the intersection of Canal Street and Live Oak Street.

According to an official statement issued by Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Silvia R. Trevino, Resendez was driving a silver Dodge Avenger westbound on Canal Street and was attempting to turn onto North Live Oak Street when he was struck by a white Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe, driven by off-duty Precinct 6 Deputy Rigo Vivar, was reportedly traveling eastbound on Canal Street but had crossed into the westbound lanes.

Constable Trevino extended her condolences to Resendez’s family and loved ones, stating, “My heart aches for their loss, and while no words can bring their loved one back, I want them to know that my thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

The Houston Police Department and the Harris County Precinct 6 Internal Affairs Division have launched an investigation into the incident. Following preliminary findings, Deputy Rigo Vivar was terminated from his position on Sunday, August 25, 2024, and is no longer employed by the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office.
