Houston Man Dies After Medical Emergency in Jail Cell

On Monday, August 12, 2024, at 2:57 p.m., Hugo Mota, 41, was pronounced deceased at St. Joseph Hospital. Mota experienced a medical emergency in his cellblock and was initially treated by medical personnel at the clinic. Houston Fire Department EMS transported him to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified of Mota’s death. The Houston Police Department is conducting an investigation, as required by state law for all jail-related deaths. Additionally, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is reviewing whether all relevant policies and procedures were adhered to.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
