Harris County Crime Reduction Unit Cuts Crime in Cypress Station by Over 30%

HOUSTON, TX – A specialized crime reduction unit from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is making a noticeable impact in Cypress Station, reducing crime by more than 30% while rebuilding trust between deputies and residents.

Launched in July 2023, the Cypress Station Crime Reduction Unit consists of nine deputies and one sergeant. The team was tasked with addressing long-standing public safety concerns and strained community relationships in the area.

“This community has lacked faith in us for decades,” said Captain Wilson. “We foster relationships and rely on the community to come to us when they need us.”

The unit’s approach goes beyond traditional patrols. Deputies actively engage with businesses and local organizations, connecting neighbors with resources while increasing visibility to deter crime. This proactive engagement has led to tangible results, including tips from residents that helped arrest a murder suspect earlier this year.

Sgt. Pierre Atkinson, who oversees the unit, says the goal is to prevent crime while being approachable and building real community relationships. “If I am a robber and I am thinking about targeting a business, I probably will not want to do it if there is a patrol car parked out front,” Atkinson said.

The unit’s efforts have produced measurable outcomes:

  • 36% overall crime reduction
  • 48% drop in family violence crimes
  • 34% decrease in aggravated robberies

Residents say the changes are evident. “I feel safer,” said Amber Madden, a Cypress Station resident. “Any incidents that happen, deputies respond quickly. It feels safer, especially with kids.”

For the first time in years, community events like Trunk-or-Treat returned, a sign of renewed partnership between HCSO and Cypress Station families.
