Galveston Man Sentenced to 70 Years for Murder in 2020 Shooting

A Galveston County jury on Monday afternoon sentenced 26-year-old Daron Donnell Scott, of Galveston, to 70 years in prison for the murder of Derion Chambers in December 2020.
The sentencing follows the conviction of Scott for his role in the deadly shooting that occurred on December 30, 2020, at approximately 11:54 p.m. According to court records, Derion Chambers was sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle when a black sedan, driven by Keandre Green, pulled alongside and opened fire approximately 13 times with an AR-type firearm. Derion Chambers died as a result of his injuries, and a second occupant of the vehicle was seriously injured after being shot multiple times.
The investigation identified two additional suspects in the backseat of Green’s vehicle: Deryus Phillips and Daron Scott.
The outcomes for the co-defendants in the case were as follows:
- Deryus Phillips, 22, pleaded guilty to Murder on December 10, 2024, and was sentenced to 20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).
- Keandre Green, 24, was charged with Murder and found not guilty by a jury trial. However, he also faced a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, to which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years’ probation with 240 hours of community service.
Authorities commended the La Marque Police Department, including Detective M. Cypert, Detective S. Leacroy, and Crime Scene Investigator Sgt. C. King, as well as Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Deputy G. Crow, for their diligent work on the case. Special recognition was also given to Galveston County District Attorney’s Office Chief Prosecutor Raneca Henson and Felony Division Chief Adam Poole for their efforts in securing the conviction and sentence.
